The architecture design process

Initial requirements

Typically, you will be engaging with your client and/or contractor, perhaps in a competitive bidding situation and may wish to develop some initial design ideas. In all probability you will wish to avoid any significant data costs at this stage until the project has been given the green light and you have won the business.

In which case, we have a suite of products which are freely available called OS OpenData, so you can view, develop and download a selection of mapping datasets for Great Britain.

Some of these products are CAD compatible and therefore could be used for developing design ideas.

Concept

At this stage you will need more detailed and accurate data to assess the feasibility of the project, carry out site analysis, scheme designs, do environmental analysis and undertake all the work leading up to the submission of planning proposals.

You will certainly need accurate, up-to-date topographic data derived from OS MasterMap and you can obtain data from our partners who offer online services.

You may need data for the following applications:

As before, we suggest that you contact one of our online partners to see if they can offer solutions in these key areas.

Design detail

At this point you have probably saved all your data into project files. Do you need to:

  • Share the data with external project consultants?
  • Archive the data for legal/regulatory purposes?
  • Copy paper versions of project data to send to various stakeholders?

You will need a Paper Map Copying Licence. Make sure you have the right licence for your particular purpose via our licensing pages.

You will almost certainly need to commission a full site survey. Make sure that your surveying contractors are using the latest standards in GPS and highly accurate Positioning services.

However, for surveyors still using traditional survey methods, we have made available horizontal and vertical survey control information.

Final stages of plan, design and build

During the production, contract administration and post completion stages, have you considered the following licensing elements?

  • Need to share the data with external project consultants?
  • Archive the data for legal/regulatory purposes?
  • Copy paper versions of project data to send to various stakeholders? You will need a Paper Map Copying Licence.

Make sure you have the right licence for your particular purpose via our licensing pages.

If you are unsure about which licence to choose and would like further help, please contact us here or call 08456 05 05 05.
