Eye in the sky to monitor offenders
This project utilises new technology and a joined-up government approach to reducing crime. The multiple benefits include reducing jail crowding and the financial burden on taxpayers, whilst providing an innovative pilot solution to the problem of reoffending
‘“Big Brother” is watching! Offenders in Greater Manchester who are either released on licence or on Exclusion Orders from the Courts can now be subject to “hybrid satellite tracking”…From the point of alert, the offender's movements are tracked in real time – appearing as a location on an Ordnance Survey® map to within two metres – and appropriate action taken.’James Toon, Head of Electronic Monitoring at the National Probation Service
The Home Office is setting up pilot projects in several counties to make paroled offenders wear an ankle bracelet that uses a Global Positioning System (GPS) to track their every move. The electronic monitoring of offenders is a new GPS technological advancement that will replace radio-frequency curfew of individuals on probation.
