Environment

Balancing the differing and sometimes conflicting interests of different environmental stakeholders is a high priority.

Key issues

You may identify with some of the following challenges:

  • flood signReassuring the public about building on flood plains in the light of floods in summer 2007.
  • Meeting climate change targets – made more urgent by the droughts in 2006 and 2005.
  • Ensuring public health is not compromised by disease epidemics in livestock, such as the outbreaks in 2007 of foot-and-mouth disease in cattle and avian 'flu in migratory wildfowl; and
  • Providing accurate information to the public and landowners about the rights of access to open countryside.
  • Assessing the relative merits of different sources of alternative energy production, each one of which carries different environmental costs.

Geographic information can address many of these by providing:

  • detailed mapping, height elevation models and high-resolution imagery of high-risk areas; and
  • a national address referencing framework that links disparate location-related datasets.

This can be made available on your Intranet to all members of your organisation as appropriate, putting information that is easy to visualise at the fingertips of those who need to make quick operational decisions.
