Competitions

Ordnance Survey run numerous competitions for schools through out the year.  These are predominantly linked to the free maps scheme.  There are no competitions running at this time, however a list of previous competitions and the winners are below.

Children competitions are run all year round on our Mapzone website.  These are open to any child up to the age of 16.


Great Britain in the year 2050

We asked school children to imagine how Great Britain could look in the year 2050. And – taking in to account the environment, seasons, transport, nature, weather and anything else they could think of – they came up with some stunning designs.

Ray Mears Competition

A special edition of the Map reading made easy leaflet was sent out with this years free maps for year 7's

Pupils had to answer five map related questions and then tell us something new they had discovered about their local area.

There are twelve first prize winners who will receive a day of bushcraft skills with Mr Mears.  There are also on offer 200 runners up prizes, where you can win either books, DVDs, compasses, ruck sacks or maps.

Free maps whiteboard comptition

Schools were asked to write a 600-800 word article, illustrated with 3-5 photographs, about how they have used the free maps in their school.  This could be based around the whole year group, a single class or an individual.  The competition was open to any school that had received free Ordnance Survey maps for year 7/Primary 7.

The winning school received a Polyvision interactive whiteboard, complete with stand, projector and Toshiba laptop.  The two runners up each recieved a Toshiba laptop.

Win a visit from Andrew Cooney

This competition was open to all schools that ordered free maps from our website before the end of September 2004.

The six randomly drawn schools received a visit from Andrew Cooney, who gave a talk at each of the schools on his expedition and adventures to the south pole.

Mapbuilder competition

Map builder was a competition aimed at 5-16 year olds, which was on our Mapzone® website.  Divided into two age groups, 5-10 & 11-16, entrants had to design a map using our Map builder software.

There were 2 winners and 2 runners-up in each age group.  The winners received £300 worth of Toys'R'Us® vouchers, and the runners-up £50 worth of vouchers.

Mapzone competitions

On our Mapzone website, there are bi-monthly competitions running all year round.  These are open to any child up to 16.  There are 10 winners per competition, and they receive a bag of Ordnance Survey goodies.
