Ordnance Survey – Great Britain's national mapping agency

Your photo as our desktop wallpaper?

Have you taken a memorable photograph of the great outdoors?

Yes to moorlandIf so, we'd like to hear from you!

We are now featuring photos of Great Britain taken by members of the public as our monthly desktop wallpaper download.

Yes to city scenes We welcome landscape photos taken in all seasons of the year and vary the part of Great Britain  featured from one month to the next.

We are looking for high quality .jpg image files of between 1.5 and 3 Mb in size.

Visit our archive to view the types of images we use.

How to maximise the chances of your photo being chosen

Ensure that detail in your photo is sharp by choosing the correct setting on your camera and, if possible, using a tripod.

Take landscape photos at either end of the day, or on days when there is broken cloud; daytime photos taken under a blanket of high cloud result in milky skies that are of less interest to us.

If your camera includes a feature to print the date in the corner of your photos, turn it off (you can see the date on which the photo was taken if you review its image file information on your computer).

Attach only one photo image file per email.

To help us when we we look for suitable pictures over the coming months, complete the subject line thus: the season in which it was taken, a brief description of the shot, the location and your name. For example:

Autumn, sunrise over Dartmoor, Princetown, John Smith

What we will not use

No foreign scenes(1) Images taken outside of Great Britain (that is, not in England, Scotland or Wales). We do not feature images of Northern Ireland because it is mapped by a separate organisation, Ordnance Survey of Northern Ireland.

No people (2) Close-up frontal shots of people.

Note: we may consider shots with people with their backs to the camera admiring the view taken as the foreground interest of a landscape shot, provided that you comply with our Terms of Submission.

No pets (3) Images of pets

Note: wild animals may form the foreground interest of landscape photos but should not be taken in close-up as the main focus of the shot.

No interiors(4) Pictures taken indoors
