Industry Body - Routing

Do you know if there is an industry body or standards authority which coordinates the attribution of roads with the weighting for use in routing by the various mapping/ sat-nav companies?
I ask this as a leading question as there is an increasing amount of 'sat-running', a combination of rat-running and sat-nav, which is causing mayhem on many minor roads. A solution might be a shared register of roads (poss. using the 'Quiet lane' classification as a start) which are unsuitable for through-routing, but I can't find a body that might coordinate this ?
Regards

There isn?t currently a body or standards authority who regulate sat nav companies. The roads are weighted, in general terms, according to class, ie Motorway, A road etc. The suppliers to sat nav companies decide the weighting. Ordnance Survey provides the road network to some of the mapping suppliers who supply to sat nav companies but does not apply any weighting itself. It is probably the responsibility of local authorities to decide which roads are unsuitable as through routes but sharing this information with data providers and sat nav companies is a very complicated process. They also have to take into account emergency services who may want to use these roads for routing. I?m sorry not to be more helpful.

hi Caroline is correct, further to those comments, Ordnance Survey as a major supplier through third parties to the Sat Nav market do take the routing through unsuitable roads seriously.
We are always happy to hear about particular roads that are "subject" to routing issues in order that we can check that they are attributed correctly within our roads products and maps.
and are happy to discuss in person over the phone particular issues. I live near Guildford so have a reasonable knowledge of that area so would love to hear more about certain concerns.

In the recent Parish Council elections "stopping the sat-nav companies using our backlanes" was a campaign issue ! Maybe a further case of Ordnance Survey and Local Government needing to get together constructively at a national level? They could then agree classifications and road hierarchies, decide how to maintain them and offer more authoritative data to the sat-nav suppliers ? Should OS be proactive in forming a (UK) industry forum if none exists ?
