Ordnance Survey is giving people the power to turn any spot in Britain into the centre of attention by launching a brand new online service allowing users to create site-centred Landranger maps.
Every map produced using the service, called OS Select, will be unique because people choose what it is centred on; it could be their home, office or favourite holiday spot – the possibilities are endless. People can even name their creation to create a personalised, one-off map for a host of leisure and business uses.
Printed at a scale of 1:50,000 (2 cm to 1 km or 1¼ inches to a mile), each full size OS Select-Landranger map covers an area of 40 km by 40 km (25 miles by 25 miles) and includes an integral legend or key, which can be printed in either English or Welsh.
Each map will contain the complete range of information featured on Ordnance Survey's popular and familiar Landranger series, including every town, village, hamlet and all roads in the selected="selected" area. They will also show public rights of way, selected="selected" places of interest and leisure facilities such as camping and picnic sites.
"Birthdays, anniversaries and other special occasions are days of the year when it's perfectly acceptable to be a little self-centred, and a unique personalised map is a great way to make someone the centre of attention," says Steve Erskine, Ordnance Survey's Managing Director of Graphic Brands.
"And thanks to the option of adding a tailor-made title of up to 16 characters plus further personalisation of up to 36 characters, it's a perfect way to put a relative, friend or even a property on the map!"
As well as making unusual gifts, OS Select-Landranger maps are also ideal for planning days out, capturing memories of favourite places or hanging in offices to show catchment areas or delivery routes.
The new service is part of the mapping agency's commitment to responding to customer needs.
The OS Select-Landranger maps cost just £11.99 each plus £2.50 postage. They can only be ordered online at www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/leisure by typing in a postcode or simply pointing and clicking on the location upon which it is to be centred. Orders are despatched within five working days with the maps delivered rolled and packed in tubes.
