About the product

OS LocatorOS Locator is a fully searchable national gazetteer for use with Ordnance Survey's range of mid-scales raster map data products. It has been compiled from a number of Ordnance Survey datasets. This includes information from the roads database, which is part of the latest generation of its sophisticated and highly detailed geographic data.

Ideally, OS Locator should be used within a geographical information system (GIS) as a location and/or search tool for reference with 1:10 000 Scale Raster data, 1:25 000 Scale Raster and OS StreetView®.

This product is updated every 6 months with the latest information contained in the source databases.

Features and benefits

When used within a GIS, OS Locator enables users to find and identify a specific location. Searches are performed using the road name or number in conjunction with a postcode sector, locality, settlement, local authority or county.

The search results can be programmed to direct the user's raster data to the chosen location which can then be viewed on screen. A grid reference is also provided to identify the relevant 1:10 000 scale and 1:25 000 scale raster map data tile displaying the area of interest.

Each road is contained within its own rectangle, the centre of which defines in which locality, postcode sector, settlement, or other features included in this gazetteer, it is located.
