Ordnance Survey – Great Britain's national mapping agency
We enclose a copy of a site plan sent to us to support a claim that the fence line shown on the plan is a legal boundary. We would like to know how the Ordnance Survey acquired the survey data and on whose authority that data was placed on the Ordnance Survey database?
Thank you for your letter dated 13th February 2010. We are pleased to provide you with the following information with regard to your request:
Firstly, I draw your attention to the fact that Ordnance Survey mapping does not depict legal property boundaries nor do we attempt to show property ownership on our mapping.
We only show the existence of physical features on the ground at the time of survey, which are surveyed to Ordnance Survey specification and published accuracy standards.
Physical features on the ground change over time, and for this reason, Ordnance Survey has a continuous mapping revision programme. In the event that there are changes to the physical features on the ground, these changes are acquired by re-surveying the area, so revised mapping can be ingested on our datasets under our authority. However, such revision will not affect legal land ownership and title deeds of a property and a registered title will not change unless authorised by Land Registry.
Please note that your enquiry has been processed to Freedom of Information guidelines. As all requested information has been provided, we have determined that in all the circumstances of this case the Public interest consideration (section 17 FOIA) is not applicable in this instance.
If you are unhappy with our response, you may raise an appeal to our Appeals Officer at:
