Licensing superseded mapping for research

Could you please advise me what your standard licensing terms (and cost) are for permission to make a digital image for private research use of an A3 sized extract, from a superseded 1:2500 scale plan extract, from an in-copyright superseded paper 1:2500 scale plan held by a public library

In using the term ‘digital image’ (not ‘digitizing’), I mean making a .pdf or .tiff scanned copy of the original paper map where the electronic form has the same functionality as a piece of paper – i.e. can be only be viewed or printed.  I specifically do not mean vectorizing.

Thank you for your clarification e-mail dated 30th March 2010. We are pleased to provide you with the following information with regard to your request:

In order to make a digital image for private research of an A3 sized extract, you would need to apply for an Ordnance Survey Superseded Library Licence.

We permit customers to copy Superseded Ordnance Survey published paper maps owned and held by public libraries.  It is entirely at the discretion of the library involved as to whether they allow customers to access their superseded maps.

This is a fee-based licence and any maps copied under this license may only be used for your internal business administration. You must apply for the license, explaining your need for copies of superseded mapping and why the current edition on sale is not suitable.

The cost of an A3 copy under this license is £0.88 per copy, however there is a minimum licence fee of £47.50 plus VAT, and the license is valid for a period of six months.

Attached to this e-mail are the terms and conditions of this license.

If you are interested purchasing such a licence, or wish to discuss licensing issues further, please contact our Customer Services department on 08456 05 05 05.

Please note that your enquiry has been processed to Freedom of Information guidelines.  As all requested information has been provided, we have determined that in all the circumstances of this case the Public interest consideration (section 17 FOIA) is not applicable in this instance.
