Transaction Costs

I am interested in understanding the nature and cost of the payments processing that you undertake within your organisation. I therefore ask that you send me the annual information on your transaction processing that covers the following areas over the course of 2009-10 and/or 2010-11 (i.e. the most recent year that you have information for).

Government to Consumer
• Total volume of payments made to individuals
• Total value of payment made to individuals
• Total volume of payments received from individuals
• Total value of payment received from individuals
• Total cost of processing these transactions
• Whether this service is part / fully outsourced or conducted in-house, if outsourced, who is the partner / supplier, and what year is the contract due for renewal

• Total volume of payments made to businesses (excluding suppliers)
• Total value of payment made to businesses (excluding suppliers)
• Total volume of payments received from businesses (excluding suppliers)
• Total value of payment received from businesses (excluding suppliers)
• Total cost of processing these transactions
• Whether this service is part / fully outsourced or conducted in-house, if outsourced, who is the partner / supplier, and what year is the contract due for renewal.

Thank you for your e-mail dated 3rd March 2010. We are pleased to provide you with the following information, although some of the information you have requested from Ordnance Survey is not held and this is detailed where applicable. We respond to each of your questions in turn.

Government to Consumer
• Total volume of payments made to individuals
Ordnance Survey does not make payments to individuals other than payroll (staff) and occasionally refunds of on-line map sales
• Total value of payment made to individuals

For the period 01/04/10 to 08/03/11, the number and total value of receipts from web shop in 2010/11 is 75,544 payments by cheque, BACS, VISA totalling £1,495,456.24 gross.
• Total value of payment received from individuals

This information in not held.
• Whether this service is part / fully outsourced or conducted in-house - If outsourced, who is the partner / supplier, and what year is the contract due for renewal.
The on-line map shop is an internal service although fulfilment of credit card transactions is carried out through RBS.

Government to Business
• Total volume of payments made to businesses (excluding suppliers)
Ordnance Survey does not make payments to businesses other than suppliers and occasional settlement of customer credit notes.
• Total value of payment made to businesses (excluding suppliers)

The number and total value (net) of receipts from business customers in 2010/11 = 17,957 payments by cheque, BACS, VISA totalling £152,249,645.52.
• Total value of payment received from businesses (excluding suppliers)
