Printing of map covers

What I would like to find out is

1. How one can tell whether a cover or a map has been printed by Ordnance Survey or Butler Tanner and Dennis. The most recent examples I have seen do not explicitly state that they have been printed by Butler Tanner and Dennis but appear to have very slightly modified typograhpy on the covers and state simply that they are "Published by Ordnance Survey..." whereas before they would state "Made, printed and Published by Ordnance Survey..."

2. As a separate query could you tell me which titles have been printed by Butler Tanner and Dennis thus far (covers and maps respectively).

3. I understand that Butler Tanner and Dennis took over the printing of Ordnance Survey maps and covers at some point last year, and we (Charles Close Society) are looking to publish an article in the next edition of our journal about the changeover, and are hoping to have some more information than we have as yet been able to find.

4. Are Butler Tanner and Dennis able to say what your first printing job was for Ordnance Survey?

5. Can you confirm that Butler Tanner and Dennis printed the cover for OS Explorer 198 Cardigan and New Quay (edition A1//, published 30 Sep 2010)

Thank you for your e-mail to Ordnance Survey dated 8th March 2011 which we acknowledge, and your e-mail to Butler Tanner and Dennis of 9th March 2011, which has been forward to me for response.

Ordnance Survey has considered your requests under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) 2000, and are pleased to provide you with the following information with regard to your two requests, within the legislative time limit of twenty working days - being the 5th and 6th April 2011 respectively. We respond to each of your questions in turn:

1. Ordnance Survey made no specific changes to our map covers as a result of moving our print location. However, we did make some changes to our map covers to align with the move to our new head office.  These changes are:

  • The address on the inside cover has now changed to our new address.
  • We now state ‘published by’ Ordnance Survey as opposed to ‘made, printed and published’ by Ordnance Survey on the inside of the cover.

The above changes did occur (by coincidence) at the same time as the print move, so the best ways to identify mapping printed by Butler Tanner and Dennis would be to check the above two points on individual maps.

2. We are pleased to attach to this response, a spreadsheet detailing the titles which have been printed by Butler Tanner and Dennis until 1st March 2011.

3.I detail below some factual points, relating to the ‘changeover’ in printing of Ordnance Survey maps for your information:

Ordnance Survey began the printing transition on 14th October 2010.

  • Butler Tanner and Dennis purchased some machinery from Ordnance Survey, this kit included: KBA printing presses, Folding machines, Casing Machines.
  • Ordnance Survey and Butler Tanner and Dennis printed in tandem between 14th October 2010 and 1st December 2010. This helped to minimise any downtime that moving of equipment and machinery may have caused. The 1st December 2010 is when Butler Tanner and Dennis took over the operation fully.
  • On completion of a map, ten copies of every title are now sent to Ordnance Survey, who perform rigorous quality checks on the titles.

4. The first Ordnance Survey map printed at Butler Tanner and Dennis was OS Landranger Map 152.

5. Butler Tanner and Dennis have not yet printed OS Explorer Map 198.
