Deposit records files

Please can you let me know from your Deposit Record File whether you have deposited any materials, maps or otherwise, bearing on the boundaries between the two Detached Areas Nos 1 and 2 of Enfield Parish as these existed down to 1882 and the ancient Parish on Monken Hadley?  You will find these on Middlesex sheet VI in the general vicinity of Grid Reference TQ251975.

Also, please can you help me with the search for a register of Book References to the areas and possibly other details of the Field or Parcel Nos 17, 16, 55, 15 & 54 in that location – have you deposited any such or might you even still hold this?

Thank you for your letter dated 19th March 2011. We are pleased to provide you with the following information in relation to your request, within the twenty working day time limit (being 18th April 2011) under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) 2000.

I regret to advise you that Ordnance Survey does not hold the information you have requested in our Deposit Record File which details the archiving of items following the closure of our Historic Map Archive (HMA), although we are able to provide the following advice and assistance in relation to your request.

Ordnance Survey does not hold historic records or Boundary Commission correspondence regarding administrative boundaries.  Such information would be held at The National Archives (TNA) and you would need to contact the directly to determine what is held and if this is likely to assist you.

In his response dated 24th January 2011, my colleague Luke Hampson provided information regarding the Boundary Remark Book and Administrative Names Book (later known as the Parish Names Book) and where these are held.  Luke also provided information in relation to the role of ‘meresmen’ and the recording of a Parish boundary in a Boundary Perambulation Book and on a Boundary Sketch Map.

I am unable to add further information in respect of this issue, other than to advise you of the contact information for TNA as follows:

Although Ordnance Survey does not hold information in relation to administrative boundaries, we have deposited historic mapping which may detail Parish information and show how these evolved. Legal deposit libraries hold the largest collection of Ordnance Survey historic mapping following the closure of our Historic Map Archive (HMA), and we suggest you may like to consider contacting one of the following two libraries, with the British Library holding the most complete collection:

The British Library

Email: maps@bl.gov.uk
Tel: 020 7412 7702
Cambridge University Library

Additionally, from our Deposit Record File which details the archive of items following the closure of our Historic Map Archive (HMA), I can advise that The London Borough of Barnet Library took receipt of 33 maps which were dispatched on the 9th June 2009.  According to our records, these contain copies of some of the 25” County Series mapping of Middlesex Sheet 6 - first edition dated 1878, second edition dated 1896 and third edition dated 1913. They also hold a limited number of 6” County Series mapping dated 1897 and 1919/20 for some of sheet 6.

If you would like to contact The London Borough of Barnet Library directly to determine if the material they hold will be of assistance, you may e-mail them as follows: Library.archives@barnet.gov.uk.

Finally, we do not hold in our Deposit Record File following the closure of our Historic Map Archive (HMA) any documentation which details: information, records or mapping we have dispatched to places of deposit by field or parcel numbers.  However, these numbers would be printed on our historic mapping.

Please note that your enquiry has been processed according to the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) 2000. As the requested information is not held, we have determined that in all the circumstances of this case the Public interest consideration (section 17 FOIA) is not applicable in this instance.
