Altering of mapping

Please advise, whether licensees under the terms of their licenses can legitimately alter Ordnance Survey maps, by cutting and pasting and overlapping different maps from different dated surveys copyrighted by the Ordnance Survey, to create illegitimate mapping that does not depict any land recorded on any known Ordnance Survey mapping in existence that for obvious reasons, cannot be obtained from the Ordnance Survey or relied on as no such mapping exists.

Thank you for your letter dated 20th April 2011, clarifying your FOI request of the 1st April 2011, which we acknowledge as being received by Ordnance Survey on the 26th April 2011 and requiring a full response by the revised date of 17th May 2011.

Ordnance Survey does not hold recorded information to provide an answer in response to your statement, however we can advise that Ordnance Survey licences would not allow the manipulation of our paper mapping to create new maps which, while appearing to be Ordnance Survey maps, do not accurately reflect the originals.

If you are unhappy with our response, you may raise an appeal to our Appeals Officer at:

FOI Appeals Officer
Customer Service Centre
Ordnance Survey
Adanac Drive
SOUTHAMPTON
SO16 0AS

Please include the reference number below. The Appeals Officer will ensure that the process has been followed correctly, questioning any decisions taken regarding the original response and recommending disclosure of additional information if appropriate.

Thank you for your enquiry.
