Ordnance Survey – Great Britain's national mapping agency
Under the Freedom of Information Act, could I please request a copy of the ‘Confirmed footpath creation order’ relating to footpath 73/63/C, Gwbert to Mwnt. How could the Ordnance Survey show footpath 73/63/C on their Ordnance Survey Explorer Map 198, Cardigan and New Quay?
Thank you for your letter dated 17 June 2011. Ordnance Survey does not hold a copy of the ‘Confirmed Footpath Creation Order’ you refer to above and is therefore unable to supply this information.
We only retain copies of footpath creation orders supplied to us where we are certain the order is both ‘confirmed’ and relates to a footpath that has been added to the relevant Local Authority’s Definitive Map. Neither apply in this case and footpath 73/63/C is therefore not shown on our mapping.
On your second and separate point (and as indicated above), Ordnance Survey does not show the alignment of footpath 73/63/C on our OS Landranger and OS Explorer Maps, but instead depicts the Ceredigion Coastal Path.
The creation of the Ceredigion Coastal Path by Ceredigion County Council is a separate issue and, because it is a Recreational Route, it is not necessary for the Ceredigion Coastal Path to appear on the Ceredigion County Council Definitive Map. Whilst we do hold information supplied from Ceredigion County Council in relation to the Ceredigion Coastal Path, it is not in the form of a Confirmed Footpath Creation Order.
