Ordnance Survey – Great Britain's national mapping agency
Dear Requester
Request for Information – FOI12331
Thank you for your clarification e-mail, of the 22nd October 2012, requesting the following information under the Freedom of Information Act (2000) FOIA:
‘As a part of our research we are looking at the types of data currently available from various public sector data sources, including data.gov.uk and OS OpenData, to examine how different industries can benefit from the open data they find there. We believe that the number of views and downloads of each dataset can provide useful insights into the relevance of the data, and thus the broader economic impact.
1. Do you think it would be possible to send me the above statistics for OS OpenData™? Or any equivalent statistics? The time period I would like to request the statistics is one year back. It would be helpful if the data is broken down into the different types of OS Open Data.
2. To aid our analysis, I will be very grateful if you could also provide us the breakdown of users who downloaded the data by market sector if that is possible?’
I confirm Ordnance Survey does hold some of the information you have requested, and we respond to your points below.
1. Below are the download figures for 2011-12 which reflect the number of products ordered (not the number of orders placed). One order generally contains more than one product.
1: 250 000 Scale Colour Raster = 3 942
1: 50 000 Scale Gazetteer = 2 470
Boundary-Line™ = 5 536
Code-Point® Open = 9 834
Land-Form PANORAMA® = 3 459
Meridian™ 2 = 2 898
MiniScale® = 4 038
OS Locator™ = 2 316
Strategi® = 2 503
OS Street View® = 46 984
OS VectorMap® District = 75 343
Under Section 16 of the FOIA ‘the duty to provide advice and assistance’ we advise that during 2011-12 there were 40 704 orders fulfilled via the download option and a further 1023 delivered via a mix of the download option and supply on DVD - where the order could not be completed via just one delivery method.
2. We do not hold information on the breakdown of users by market sector, as our systems do not capture any information on the sector or the person/company placing the order, so we cannot provide this information to you.

As the information you have requested has been provided or is not held by Ordnance Survey, there is no public interest case to consider in this instance.
