Mapping the Olympics site

After the bid was won and the plans were agreed, civil engineers working for the Olympic Delivery Authority began preparing the land for construction. This involved demolishing old structures, cleaning contaminated soil, improving the many waterways that cross the Park, burying overhead power lines and ensuring that wildlife and plant species were protected.

At the same time civil engineers working as part of a multi-disciplinary team, got to work constructing the stadiums, roads, bridges, waterways and electricity systems. Much of the infrastructure has been cleverly designed so that it can be quickly and efficiently removed - partially or entirely - after the Games.

Using detailed aerial imagery, Ordnance Survey has charted the progress of the entire engineering project. The video below shows just how quickly the area developed, illustrating perfectly the importance of having access to the most up-to-date information.
