Rob Osment: sophisticated assessments to tackle increased weather events

Employed by RSA® since 1984, Rob currently manages the Geographic Risk Assessment Unit, responsible for the design and delivery of RSA’s geographic peril models and geographic risk accumulation solutions.

How long have you been using our mapping data?

RSA has been using Ordnance Survey data for many years. Our first use of mapping data was in our initial flood-risk model that we began to use in 2002.

What do you find most useful?

For us it is the combination of very accurate address validation and the context that the mapping brings that provides the most benefit at the moment. Alongside our in-house peril risk models, this information provides us with some very detailed insights.

Why did you become interested in geographic information?

I have always had an interest in geography, but it was only when there was a realisation within RSA that we needed a more geographic approach to risk assessment that I was given the opportunity to bring geography into my day job. I don’t believe that previously it was quite so apparent how important a role geography plays within our industry. I haven’t looked back since!

What, in your opinion, are the key issues facing the insurance industry over the next three years?

The increasing frequency and severity of weather-related events will lead us to look at evermore sophisticated ways of understanding and assessing geographic risks. During economically tough conditions, it is usual to see an increase in the level of fraudulent activity. It is unlikely that the current situation will be any different.

Tell us something not many people know about you? An interesting fact or claim to fame, for example.

I like to scuba-dive, although I get less opportunity these days. Wreck diving is my passion.
