Career opportunities in Data Collection and Management
Data Collection and Management (DCM) is responsible for the collection, collation and quality of the data used to populate the definitive National Geographic Database from which all our products originate.
Our challenge is to make sure major changes to the British landscape (for example, new buildings, demolitions, boundary movements, new roads and new rail routes) are reflected in our database within six months, as accurately and cost-effectively as possible. A continuous programme of rigorous checking ensures the data in our products and services meets the demands of our customers.
Surveyor
Reporting to the Production Manager, we have three types of surveyor:
- Field Surveyors – based around the country, using ground survey methods and the latest technology to collect data to update our database.
- Photogrammetric Surveyors – based at our head office, using remote sensing methods such as aerial photography to update our database.
- Data Collectors – also based at our head office, using a variety of desktop methods to collect, edit and maintain geospatial information.
They are all really good at solving problems, working collaboratively and delivering the required results.
Production Manager
Our production managers use operations management knowledge to schedule, plan and allocate work to teams and individuals. Through coaching and developing the skills and knowledge of their team members, they ensure work requirements meet quality expectations and are delivered on time and in full. They are very good at accurately analysing information to help their decision making and at delivering results through others.
Technical Consultant
We have three levels of technical experts: Technical Specialists, Senior Consultants and Principal Consultants. They use their expert knowledge of data capture and data management technology to inform strategy development and advise others on how to get the most out of the technology being used in Ordnance Survey. These technical experts have highly developed problem solving and influencing skills.
