Career opportunities in Information Systems
Information Systems (IS) develop and manage the IT infrastructure, data, software and hardware on which our business depends.
As a knowledge, information and technology business, we want our customers to make maximum use of our products, so we ensure that there is a perfect knit between their systems and our data, as well as the methods we use to supply their data.
IS work with all areas of our organisation, constantly looking for ways to improve the essential systems used to collect and store our data and run our business. They are leading the implementation of our new seamless database management system, which will improve the speed and efficiency of how we handle and generate our geographic information.
Our principal architects use their excellent consultancy and problem-solving skills to work with our business planners to deliver high-quality architecture solutions and strategic recommendations to the business. They have a good track record in the understanding and definition of solution architectures, risk identification and management and are knowledgeable about the application technologies we use.
Our solution architects enable design and development of projects by providing high-level definition of solution architectures to build robust systems and so improve our capability. They all have good skills and knowledge of the software development lifecycle (SDL) and at least one key technical IS domain, for example geospatial, web or SAP® together with some knowledge of all of the other key domains used. Our solution architects thrive on solving problems and have excellent communication skills.
Developers/Designers (Web/Geospatial)
Our developers and designers are keen problem solvers who enjoy communicating with and providing solutions to their customers’ specifications and timescales. They are all knowledgeable about and have skills in at least one of the core technologies we use, for example, geospatial, web, databases and SAP or infrastructure and are also knowledgeable about the SDL.
Working in a service desk environment and using our work management tool, the IT support analysts and application support analysts provide our internal customers with a coordinated IT support and advice service. They are inquisitive and enjoy solving problems and delivering timely solutions to their customers. All of our support analysts hold a qualification in an appropriate IT field or have equivalent experience. Our application support analysts also have a track record of configuring, supporting and maintaining multiple technical applications and working within an Information technology information library environment. They are experts in supporting systems and fully understand the applications’ business impact.
Our developers have knowledge of at least one other core technology and are skilled in one core programming language or tool, for example, J2EE, Java®, C#, SAP configuration, and make good use of these to design, build and maintain software applications. Our designers are great team players who provide quality software design and technical advice throughout the SDL to ensure solutions are well designed and meet the business need. They have good knowledge of software development methodology, (for example, RUP®, SSADM®, Agile®, RAD) and the use of case tools together with skills in technical design processes.
