IS Support Analyst

Location: Southampton

Salary:  £21,372 - 26,245

This exciting role within the Application Support Team is an ideal position for someone embarking on a career in IT. The team provides Second Level support to the wide variety of IT Applications that are vital to the success of Ordnance Survey. First Level Support, the logging of calls and incidents, is provided by our Service Desk. You, as part of the Second Level support team will use a range of tools, techniques and investigative skills to resolve these incidents.

You will also be responsible for a wide variety of other tasks to ensure the effective running of the Applications. These include system monitoring, housekeeping, regular maintenance tasks, periodic data loads, interacting with your customers and responding to their queries. You will also liaise with Infrastructure teams to carry out hardware and operating system upgrades. 

You must have the potential to be comfortable with working at the Command Line level and have the skills to interpret basic scripting. Importantly you must have a thirst for learning and to be flexible and willing to perform a wide variety of support and maintenance activities.

We are always striving to improve the quality of what we do, and as part of your job you will be expected to identify improvements either to applications or processes to enhance the customer experience of our IT applications.

Essential Criteria

  • Basic knowledge of IT beyond that of an end user. This may be in terms of experience at the Command Line in any operating system, configuration of packages and applications, including the writing of any macros or setting up of blogs or 'wikis'.
  • Track record of prioritising tasks and delivering to deadlines
  • Working Together - Able to work effectively and fully contribute in a variety of teams and situations. Consistently display a positive approach to working with others by seeking to share knowledge and experiences.
  • Communication - Able to use a number of forms of communication appropriately and in a timely manner; formal written, emails, discussion and presentation. Possess the ability to present technical information clearly and at an appropriate level to the audience.
  • Solving Problems - Good analytical skills with an ability to solve technical problems and to quickly assimilate information from multiple sources

Desirable Criteria

  • Basic working knowledge of Linux/Unix at the Command Line level
  • Basic working understanding of the fundamentals of databases; for example the ability to carry out basic queries, knowledge of tables and indexes
  • Basic working knowledge of the Windows Operating system such as an understanding of .BAT files and scheduling.
  • Skills in another technology such as Web or ArcGis
  • Customer focus - Strong customer focus to continue to provide the existing levels of service. Takes ownership of customer queries and requests.
