When every minute really counts…
The detailed mapping that the OS MasterMap Topography Layer brings us and the ability to export this to .dxf format for work within our CAD software has given us a risk document that is second to none. Also the ability to include the documents within the MDT’s has given us the ability to arm our fire-fighters with the necessary information they require to keep them safe on site.

Gloucestershire FRS needed to create no nonsense, easy to follow risk document for fire crews to use on route and at the scene of an operational incident. Faster assessment and control at an incident will lead to lower costs of resultant damage and reduce the threat to life.

Each station across Gloucestershire had developed a top ten list of fire-fighter risk properties and over the last eight years this information has been enhanced to provide a comprehensive detailed knowledge of over 300 properties within the county. All properties require a site plan and top and high risk properties have a detailed computer-aided design (CAD) plan.

However, many site plans were basic and containing little or no mapping detail and needed to be updated to provide something clear and concise that operational fire-fighters could look at and understand immediately and use at the beginning and through the course of an incident.

Gloucestershire FRS has used detailed mapping data from Ordnance Survey (including OS MasterMap® Topography Layer) to produce a series of operational risk cards that contain comprehensive information on all fire-fighter risk properties. Hazards can be easily, quickly and clearly identified together with isolation points and fire-fighter aids. An easy to follow OS MasterMap Topography Layer site plan is used to show the key premise information, coupled with highly detailed CAD plans that assist in an operation from the crews’ arrival at the incident.

The implementation of mobile data terminals on each appliance, also using Ordnance Survey mapping, has allowed this information to be linked to detailed CAD plans for each individual property within the risk database.

Risk card contains comprehensive information on risks to fire-fighters.

  • Detailed site plans enable crews to deal with incidents more quickly reducing risk to life and property.
  • Hazard identification enables better informed decisions at the incident reducing the risk to personnel.
