Enabling easier access to Hampshire’s countryside
 The release of public rights of way data derived from Ordnance Survey products by Hampshire County Council, allows greater accessibility to important information by the general public. The PSMA licensing terms mean that public sector customers can now offer greater flexibility and opportunities online, which may not have been available to the end-user otherwise.

Hampshire’s countryside is some of the most beautiful in the country, with numerous public rights of way and open access land. There is a requirement to provide current and accurate information to the public to allow them easier access to the paths and bridleways – helping them to get out and enjoy the countryside and improve their health and well-being.

Working with Ordnance Survey, Hampshire County Council has achieved open data status for its rights-of-way data, originally captured against Ordnance Survey’s 1:10 000 Scale Raster product, through the exemption process offered by Ordnance Survey. This now means the public can take the data with them as they walk or ride the thousands of miles of routes across the county.

As well as making the data downloadable, the authority has also provided more user-friendly maps online, using the Esri® (UK) LocalView Fusion® product. Previous maps were difficult to navigate and provided limited information on the rights-of-way network. The new mapping is more dynamic and flexible in its delivery of the data. Hampshire County Council is committed to transparency and finding opportunities to open up its data. By making this data available in usable formats, the council is enabling the community to develop and share new uses for the information, increasing its value to all users.

Easier-to-navigate mapping allows users to identify routes and to plan their time in the Hampshire countryside.Users can now download the rights of way data to view on alternative mapping solutions, such as Google Earth™.
