One of the holy grails of any mapping agency, Ordnance Survey included, is to collect change information for map updates, efficiently and at the least cost.

With recent improvements in GPS technology on mobile devices, specifically iPhone and iPad, this project has the aim of gathering knowledge from the general public in regard to changes in their environment and submitting these to Ordnance Survey for map updates.

This is not to override current change intelligence channels and techniques, but rather to work alongside them and raise more awareness of certain areas where many people are reporting the same change. This change will of course be later verified by one of our surveyors for input into the mapping system.

The other aspect of this project aims at gaining full potential GPS accuracy, to a sub-metre level, on iOS devices for a light surveying app to be implemented on such devices. This could potentially replace the touch book type devices currently used in the field. It would reduce the weight of the equipment the surveyor needs to carry and reduce the cost of equipment to a large degree due to the relatively lower cost of iPads. The GPS accuracy improvement could be achieved by OSNet Differential GPS technology.
