Scamp-4 with Scamp-5

“Vista” – Our School Aerial Photography

Vista is brand new software from Wildgoose, an update of the “Aerial” software containing colour vertical aerial photography, site-centred on your school together with Land-Line data. The viewer allows the user to navigate around the image in any direction as well as zoom in or out to view the area at different scales.

Students can draw over the top of the photography, creating their own maps by adding symbols, lines, polygons, text and labels. This can be printed out with the photographic data or as a separate layer.

Scale bars, north arrows, and title information are shown.

Students can set up their own projects about the school and the local area to incorporate text, photographs, video and sound into user-generated hotspots.
Ordnance Survey Land-Line data can be overlaid on the photography.

4-6 or 8-figure co-ordinate references are displayed on screen together with Latitude and Longitude.

Map Explorer 2

Map Explorer 2 is a mainstream and royalty-free geographic information system (GIS) that provides easy view and display access to digital map data and other spatial information. It has been developed by ESRI (UK) to enable schools to distribute and get value from geographic data assets at no cost for software.

Eye - Educate (Geographical Applications for schools)

The Eye-EDUCATE suite of applications are available for schools and pupils to utilise digital maps and GIS.

Eye-EDUCATE is available as a series of web-hosted applications empowering the use of geographical data, both within the school and at home, via the Internet. Data from a wide variety of sources can be displayed within the Eye-EDUCATE suite, including Ordnance Survey datasets. GeoMedia® UK schools pack

A classroom resource that provides access to Intergraph’s GeoMedia Professional GIS software, together with tools for accessing data from Ordnance Survey (NTF, GML and raster) and other organisations. Memory-Map – digital mapping for the whole of Great Britain

Mapping Skills

Mapping Skills is a skill-and-drill program that uses Ordnance Survey map extracts to teach map reading.

Map extracts for the following scales are used:

  • 1:10 000
  • 1:25 000
  • 1:50 000
  • Land-Line

As the maps are licensed Ordnance Survey products the students will get experience in the classroom of dealing with the type of maps that they will come across ‘in the field’. A range of lesson options are available, which can be tailored to suit the amount of classroom time.

The program is interactive and varied. The students are given hints and tips; the program can be set to correct the student's work and all their results can be stored so that a teacher can check on the progress of the class.

InfoMapper and InfoMapper Community

InfoMapper Community is a new FREE learning environment provided by WebBased Ltd. It provides an open Resource Library where teachers can find free teaching and learning resources. It is a Web 2.0 application providing collaboration tools including Blogging. Its resource creation tools can be used by 35 concurrent users in a Primary School and 70 concurrent users in a Secondary School entirely without charge. This includes free home access, providing online pupil learning space as required by the DfES.

Users who wish to use the resources in the context of maps are able to purchase an InfoMapper mapping license. This will provide access to a wide range of maps including Ordnance Survey data for the whole country during the period of the Becta/Ordnance Survey Digital Map Data Pilot Project. Further aerial photography and world mapping are provided, and InfoMapper includes additional aerial and map data where an Authority holds the appropriate license.
