How to choose the right map

1:10 000 scale

Maps at a scale of 1:10 000 are mid-scale maps. One centimetre on a 1:10 000 scale map is equal to 10 000 centimetres (or 100 metres) on the ground; four centimetres on the map therefore represents 400 metres on the ground (10cm = 1 km). Alternatively, 6¼ inches on the map is equal to 1 mile on the ground.

At 1:10 000 scale, roads, road names and major buildings are clearly marked together with rivers, streams and other land features. However, in built-up areas the scale dictates there is insufficient space to show all buildings in detail so these and other features are identified in a more diagrammatic, generalised way. Hence the clock tower of Big Ben is not highlighted.

This kind of map is most useful for town planners, builders and farmers who require a lot of detail for a relatively large area.
