Ordnance Survey – Great Britain's national mapping agency
Maps at a scale of 1:625 000 are very small-scale maps. One centimetre on a 1:625 000 scale map is equal to 625 000 centimetres (or 6 250 metres – 6.25 kilometres) on the ground; four centimetres on the map therefore represents 25 kilometres on the ground. Alternatively, one inch on the map is equal to ten miles on the ground.
At 1:625 000 scale, only major towns and cities are detailed together with major roads and rivers.
Maps at this scale are used for administrative purposes by businesses and government departments wanting to view very large areas of the country. They are also useful for planning journeys over long distances.
The Ordnance Survey paper product available at 1:625 000 scale is the Great Britain Route Map.
