A personalised map in your sights

Get off the shelf with site-centred map service

The frustration of finding yourself on the edge of a map is about to be banished for good. Ordnance Survey is launching an online service where customers can order individually printed maps centred anywhere in Britain – whether that's a person's house, favourite countryside walk or holiday destination.

Keen walkers, horseriders and other outdoor enthusiasts will be able to site-centre a 1:25 000 scale folded Explorer map, customised to show their chosen 20 x 20 km area on one sheet. This popular series features every town, village and hamlet in the country, shows roads and footpaths in detail, and pinpoints a host of leisure facilities. Each site-centred map can be supplied in a water-resistant clear plastic wallet to help it stand up to the ravages of the British weather.

"This is a real revolution in the way we deliver maps," says Jeremy Stokes, Ordnance Survey's Marketing Manager. "OS Select offers our customers more choice than ever before. They can order an Ordnance Survey map that is as durable as those on sale in shops, but without having to stick to an area covered by our off-the-shelf ranges. Now you can log on at any time of day or night, order exactly the map area you want, and have it delivered to your door within days.

"If you want to carry your map around in your rucksack or car, you can have it supplied already folded. Or, you can have your map supplied flat if you want to display it as a feature on your wall. You can even choose your own title and panel illustration to make your map totally unique.

"It's often difficult to know what to buy friends and relatives for Christmas. An OS Select map could provide the perfect solution as a really novel gift for outdoor enthusiasts."

Ordnance Survey's popular OS Landranger mapping is also available through OS Select, offering an ideal opportunity to plan daytrips and holidays in advance with a tailor-made 1:50 000 scale leisure map. Each 40 km x 40 km map contains a legend and the complete range of tourist and landscape symbols featured on the regular OS Landranger Map series.

OS Select maps are available to order by logging on to www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/leisure or by telephoning 0845 200 2712. Maps at both scales are supplied either flat (rolled in a plastic tube) or folded (in a plastic wallet). OS Select Landranger maps are priced at £15.99 each plus £2.50 postage and packing; OS Select Explorer maps are £16.99 plus £2.50 postage and packing.
