Dublin conference assesses accuracy improvement in mapping data

Data suppliers and users to share ideas

The impact of improving the positional accuracy of today’s geographical data using the latest surveying technologies is the focus of a forthcoming international conference.

The event is being held by the pan-European research platform, EuroSDR (European Spatial Data Research – formerly OEEPE) and the Dublin Institute of Technology. It is supported by the Ordnance Surveys of Great Britain and Ireland as well as the International Federation of Surveyors (FIG).

Delegates from data suppliers such as national mapping organisations and software and service providers will share ideas on improving the positional accuracy of base mapping with data users and researchers.

The conference comes as advances in surveying and production techniques, such as precision aerial photography and satellite-based GPS, mean map makers are increasingly having to fit higher accuracy work into previously surveyed detail. Delegates will examine the current state of positional accuracy issues in different countries and available technology, but will also look at the implications for data users in maintaining the integrity of their GI databases.

The conference will offer the chance to discuss and try to solve issues in positional accuracy improvement (PAI) based on the experience of projects across the world. Current initiatives include Ordnance Survey’s own PAI project in Britain, the introduction of a new GPS-compatible co-ordinate system in Ireland, and a $100 million map modernisation project in the United States.

The conference, Impacts of Improving the Positional Accuracy of GI Databases, takes place at The Grand Hotel, Malahide, Co. Dublin, on 5th to 7th May, 2004.
