The seventeenth annual EUREF Symposium, hosted by Ordnance Survey and the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), is coming to London on 7 to 9 June.

Over 120 delegates from universities, research centres, and the national mapping and cadastral agencies from more than 30 countries across Europe and beyond will gather to report and discuss the latest developments in the world of geodetic information.

EUREF deals with the definition, realisation and maintenance of the European Reference Frame – the geodetic infrastructure for multinational projects requiring precise georeferencing. It works closely with the IAG components (services, commissions, and inter-commission projects) and EuroGeographics, the consortium of the national mapping agencies in Europe. Every year since 1990 a symposium has been held as an open forum in which delegates are invited to contribute.

On this year’s agenda, as well as all the latest news on ongoing projects, will be the work that’s going on around the establishment and maintenance of ETRS89 (European Terrestrial Reference System) and EVRS (European Vertical Reference System). Both ETRS89 and EVRS are maintained through the development of the EUREF Permanent Network (EPN). The EPN is made up of a network of continuously observing high-accuracy GPS and GLONASS stations – the status and next steps in EPN’s development will be discussed.

Neil Ackroyd, Director of Data Collection & Management at Ordnance Survey, comments, "We are delighted to be jointly hosting EUREF 2007 alongside RICS. It is an important and valuable opportunity for the geodetic community from across Europe, and beyond, to come together. The symposium gives every delegate the chance to make presentations, raise issues, and report on their own national activities. I’d like to invite anyone to make a contribution to help ensure that EUREF 2007 is a great success."
