Members of staff from Ordnance Survey have given up their free time to help create a ‘healthy growing zone’ garden for children at The Cedar School, Southampton.
Eighteen staff members from the national mapping agency spent a day at the school, which caters for disabled children from the ages of 3 to 16, building a raised, wheelchair‑friendly vegetable garden with an easy-access path as well as a compost area and flower beds.
Headteacher Jonathan Howells says, "The children and I are truly delighted that staff from Ordnance Survey have chosen to give up their time to help our school. I’d like to say thank you to everyone who has been involved.
"The work will make a genuine difference to all of our pupils", Mr Howells adds, "and ties in wonderfully with our 'healthy schools' bid that we are currently applying for. As a school for children with special needs, we’re always grateful for any additional support that people can give."
Ordnance Survey photographer Peter Seden was also on hand to take photos, which will be printed to decorate the school’s corridors.
Dave Jenkins of Ordnance Survey, who helped organise the day, says, "It’s been hard work but very rewarding. I hope what we’ve done will make a real difference to the children here.
"I think I can speak for all of us when I say that it’s been a very enjoyable day and I’d like to say a big 'thank you' to all the children who did a great job looking after us, cooking our lunch and providing drinks throughout the day!"
Ordnance Survey gives every member of staff the chance to take one paid day a year for voluntary work and also supports local children’s hospice Naomi House and Oaklands School.
