Charities and community groups offered online support by Ordnance Survey

Local charities and community group web developers are invited to a free ‘mash-up evening’ in Southampton showing how to make the most of Ordnance Survey mapping online.

The session, aimed at developers working with charities, community groups and special interest websites, will show how they can put Ordnance Survey mapping on their own websites using OS OpenSpace, a new online mapping application.

John Abbott, OS OpenSpace Product Manager at Ordnance Survey said:

“We are really keen to show people how easy it is to use OS OpenSpace and help them get our mapping on their websites.  It’s free to use and is a brilliant opportunity to learn how using mapping on a website can make it more effective.”

“We know there are loads of people creating websites on behalf of charities and community groups – websites that are really important to their audiences. This is a chance to show how using location information can make the website more relevant and useful to an audience. It’s also a great opportunity to put the brains behind Ordnance Survey’s web services to work on your own problem. We love a challenge!”

One of the groups already using OS OpenSpace is Eastleigh District Scouts (www.eastleigh-scouts.org.uk/district-map).  David Patrick who created the website said:

“It is really useful to show where the various Scout groups meet as it allows people who are interested to find out how to get involved. Using OS OpenSpace was fairly straightforward and there is lots of online help. I’d recommend it.”
