Across the country, thousands of people are making a new year’s resolution to get fit and work off all those extra calories consumed over the festive period. Getting fit doesn’t have to mean an expensive gym membership; you could take advantage of the free British countryside, and use OS Select to help you plan walks or cycle routes.

OS Select is a customised version of the popular OS Explorer and OS Landranger Maps. You can site-centre the maps to cover the area you or your loved ones would get the most use out of. So, if you know they love walking in the hills, you could choose an area in the Lake District – one of the most popular requests – and help them burn some extra calories.

A 3-mile walk in the hills could burn off 423 calories, about a serving of Christmas pudding and brandy butter. Alternatively, if your loved one's a fan of walking on the flat, they’d need to cover 4 miles of terrain, and a map centred on the New Forest – another popular choice – might be a better option for them.

Of course, you might want to centre the map on your own home or local area to make sure the maximum use can be made from getting out into the great outdoors and burning off those Christmas calories!

With over 430,000 OS Select maps sold since their launch in 2003, OS Select is proving to be a popular choice. Top areas requested for OS Select include people’s homes, closely followed by our National Parks and cities such as London, Bath and York.
