OS OpenSpace helps save lives

Ordnance Survey data is being used to help save lives and promote better driving by an award winning website for Cheshire. Cheshire Safer Roads Partnership (CSRP) was awarded runner up in the Ordnance Survey GIS User of the Year 2010 for its use of OS OpenSpace on its website displaying locations of safety cameras and road collisions.

The website – www.mysaferroads.org.uk – pulls together a wide range of information to improve driving skills and provide information about road safety. 

Gurminder Marwaha, Communications Manager at Cheshire Safer Road Partnership said:

"Showing where safety cameras are encourages people to drive safely and responsibly, and to take particular care at collision hotspots. Hopefully, the new website will help reduce the number of collisions and save lives.

"We found the Ordnance Survey mapping easy to use on our website and it was simple to add our own information to the map. We are pleased that it has been recognised by Ordnance Survey and hope to share our good practice with other community agencies."

CSRP is a multi-agency Partnership committed to saving lives on the roads of Cheshire, Halton and Warrington. Its goal is to save lives across the roads of Cheshire, making it a safer place in which to walk, ride and drive.

It has used Ordnance Survey’s OS OpenSpace data, which is freely available online.

John Abbott, OS OpenSpace Product Manager at Ordnance Survey said:

"OS OpenSpace is perfect for community initiatives and can be used by groups and individuals who have ideas about making things better in their own communities. It’s really simple to use and our web-map-builder tool makes it easy for anyone to access high quality mapping, even if they are not familiar with the technology."
