Britain from the Air opens in Oxford Castle

Following its successful launch in Bath last year the popular exhibition, Britain from the Air, has taken its first step on a UK-wide tour, in Oxford.

Created by The Royal Geographical Society (with IBG), Wecommunic8 and with support from Ordnance Survey, Britain from the Air combines stunning aerial photography from specialist photographers all over the country with informed descriptions, images and maps.

The outdoor exhibition features more than 100 spectacular images celebrating Britain’s wonderfully diverse natural and human landscapes with engaging captions, supporting images and fascinating maps. In addition, ten specially selected aerial photographs representing some of the most striking views of the City of Oxford have been selected by the Oxford Preservation Trust.

A giant walk-on Ordnance Survey map will again accompany the free outdoor exhibition so that visitors can walk the length and breadth of the country and see for themselves the variety of locations included in the images.

Geographer and broadcaster Nick Crane, who officially opened the exhibition, said:  “Oxford Castle is a sensational setting for these stunning aerial photographs. Each of the images has been carefully selected to tell a geographical story about the earth’s surface – whether it’s medieval farming, the growth of Oxford from Saxon town to university city, or the environmental cost of industry. We want people to look at the images and see Britain as they have never seen it before. 

“I’m delighted that the exhibition has come to Oxford, a city close to my heart, and we hope that these wonderful images will inspire everyone to get out and explore the country for themselves.”

Britain from the Air made its debut in Bath in 2010 and is now setting out on a national tour of the UK with Oxford as the first location. Viewed by some four million people in Bath, this free-to-access street gallery is the perfect way to see Britain from a unique aerial perspective, combined with a large-scale, walk-on Ordnance Survey map enabling visitors to walk the length and breadth of the British Isles, finding favourite locations and discovering new ones.

Britain from the Air will remain at Oxford Castle throughout the summer until 4 September 2011.
