Ordnance Survey – Great Britain's national mapping agency
Census boundaries are essential for thematic shading of areas by demographic characteristics, since they reflect the geography at which demographic data is collected. The 1991 Census of Population was undertaken using boundaries defined at Census night in April 1991. At the finest level these comprise census enumeration districts (EDs) in England and Wales and output areas (OAs) in Scotland. There are approximately 150 000 EDs and OAs in Great Britain. EDs nest into wards (OAs into postcode sectors in Scotland), which in turn nest into local authority districts (LAs), and thence into counties (regions in Scotland). EDs also nest into parishes in England and Wales.
ED-LINE census boundaries have been derived from the official Census boundary maps and nest exactly within other official electoral and administrative boundaries.
The ED-LINE consortium, comprising MapInfo®, GLA (Greater London Authority), MVA and Ordnance Survey, have produced two product ranges: a highly accurate and detailed Professional product range designed for use by organisations requiring the greatest possible accuracy; and a more compact Marketeer product range for business users. Both the Professional and the Marketeer products are available on a choice of single-user, multi-user or corporate licences, ensuring there is an affordable licence for all sizes of organisation. Unlike other census map products, national and regional ED-LINE datasets include higher order administrative boundaries at no extra cost.
