OS MasterMap Integrated Transport Network (ITN) Layer

Systems & software that accept OS MasterMap data

Overview

The  Integrated Transport Network (ITN) Layer is the definitive, most accurate and up‑to‑date geographic reference for Great Britain’s road structure. The ITN Layer contains:

The Roads Network - represents all navigable roads across Great Britain, from motorways to alleyways. Each road link has a unique topographic identifier or TOID® to which feature and statistical data can be attached to aid location management and analysis.

Road Routing Information (RRI) – has comprehensive restriction and advisory route information, which may influence a driver’s choice of route. Included are:

  • Mini roundabouts
  • Bridge heights
  • Traffic calming
  • Vehicle restrictions
  • One-way roads
  • Vehicular type access and time restrictions

How to use it

The OS MasterMap ITN Layer provides the platform for geographic data management and routing within a wide range of applications such as:

Planning, monitoring, analysis

  • road safety, including accident rate statistics;
  • civil contingency planning and operations;
  • safe routes to school;
  • street-works management and co-ordination;
  • road-user charging;
  • emergency service command and control;
  • noise mapping; and
  • traffic analysis.

Asset management

  • road maintenance – revenue support grants;
  • street furniture, for example, fire hydrants, lamp posts;
  • buried services; and
  • each local authority can create and maintain its component of the National Street Gazetteer to level 3.

Transport, logistics and distribution

  • telematics products such as navigation systems;
  • comprehensive journey routing (such as www.transportdirect.info);
  • fleet management;
  • routing for courier and express companies; and
  • scheduling and tracking by haulier.

How it can benefit you

If you…

…have the responsibility for planning, scheduling or providing geographic information to your employees, customers, or the public, it is important to use the latest and most accurate information available. The ITN Layer has a continuous programme of revision capturing real-world change at the same detailed level nationwide. Changes in the data are made available every six weeks.

…need a common standard of reference to allow different data systems to communicate with each other, the ITN Layer and TOID infrastructure allow you to have that common reference point.

…need to create and maintain the National Street Gazetteer to level 3, the ITN Layer supports this.

…have the additional responsibility of planning and scheduling traceable loads.Using the RRI users can realise significant benefits in increased customer satisfaction and reduced-expenses journey planning.
