Feature Catalogue

OS MasterMap Topography Layer

This feature catalogue provides definitions of real-world features that are identifiable within OS MasterMap topography layer. These features types represent grouping of real-world features, and the cartographic text may provide additional contextual information as to the nature of a particular feature. The features are uniquely described by the five classifying attributes of descriptiveGroup, descriptiveTerm, Make, physicalLevel and physicalPresence. These attributes, along with the basic feature types, are described within the catalogue.

Feature Types

osgb:artificialSlope

Artificial slope

Definition
Manmade inclinations in the ground which are permanent features and generally over 1.0 m in height, and associated with other features such as roads, railways (including disused and dismantled features), reservoirs and sports stadia; or constructed for another specific practical purpose, eg noise reduction. Ornamental slopes are not shown. Artificial slopes of any size are captured when an administrative or electoral boundary is mered to them; or they define an antiquity feature which is represented in the data. Where the limits of slopes are co-extensive with other detail the slopes will be offset.

osgb:benchMarkSymbol

Bench Mark Symbol

Definition
A cartographic symbol representing the position and orientation of a bench mark. The symbol is positioned with the apex indicating the precise position of the bench mark and at right angles to the face of the detail on which the mark is placed, but may be pivoted through an angle not greater than 30 degrees to avoid obscuring essential detail.

osgb:boundaryMereingSymbol

Boundary Mereing Symbol

Definition
Cartographic symbol repesenting the postion of a change in mereing of a political or administrative boundary. Mereings represent the relationship between administrative boundaries and actual physical features. For example <CS> typically means that the boundary is along the centre of a stream. Some mereings include offsets such as <0.91m RH>, this indicates a boundary offset 0.91m from the root line of the hedge.

osgb:building

Building

Definition
A permanent roofed construction. Includes permanent mobile/park homes and caravans that are self contained, occupied principally for residential purposes and have postal addresses. Garages are captured when they meet the generic specification criteria. Portable, semi-portable buildings or structures such as portakabins, caravans without postal addresses, etc. are not captured with the exception of prefabricated classrooms within school grounds expected to remain for more than 10 years. A building attached to a larger building, but of completely different construction, is treated as a separate building and captured as a separate feature with the exception of such buildings within private gardens attached to private residential dwellings when they are captured as one feature. A building attached to a larger building of the same type of construction are considered part of the larger building and captured as a single feature.
