Using GPS with Ordnance Survey maps

If we were just using GPS, that would be the end of the story. However, we are often trying to relate our position to features on the map, which causes additional problems and errors, because GPS and Ordnance Survey maps use different models for the earth and coordinate systems.

An overview of the GPS system

The Navstar global positioning system (GPS) is a constellation of orbiting satellites that provides navigation data to military and civilian users all over the world. The system is operated and controlled by members of the 50th Space Wing located at Schriever Air Force Base (AFB), Colorado.

Satellite navigation system developments

GPS is being modernised in a programme lasting until around 2015. This will mean that GPS derived raw positions will become increasingly more accurate and quicker to determine. Even so, it is no longer the only eye in the sky.
