In OS MasterMap® Integrated Transport Network™ Layer (ITN) features are classified using feature type and feature description attributes. This section describes the feature types in Path Routing Information, illustrates their permitted attribution and shows the expected occurrence of the attributes for each feature type in the data. These occurrences are shown in UML notation; 0 for optional, 1 for a single, * for multiple, and ‘or’ being represented by double dots (..).

Path Routing Information (PRI) describes features that restrict or allow movement across the Urban Paths network. The PRI model can also be used to describe features of interest, such as bollards or steps.

As with RRI, PRI features are captured as one of five types:

  • PathNodeInformation – coincident with an intersection of network lines
  • PathLinkInformation – to a PathLink regardless of direction of travel
  • PathRouteInformation – along a PathLink or link(s) in a specific direction
  • PathPartialLinkInformation – along part of a PathLink, regardless of direction of travel
  • PathPartialRouteInformation – along part of a PathLink in a specified direction.

Each information feature type also has three qualifier attributes. The Urban Path Network uses parts of the existing Road Network data model for these.

PathNodeInformation

PathNodeInformation is information that may influence a pedestrian’s choice of route and that applies to a PathNode feature in the network. These features are not populated in the first release of the product but will include items such as 'Pedestrian Crossings'. These features can reference either a PathNode or a ConnectingNode.

PathLinkInformation

PathLinkInformation is information that may influence a pedestrian's choice of route but not adversely prohibit their route; these features are predominantly steps, footbridges and cycle paths. This information applies to a single PathLink feature in both directions of travel and relates to a whole PathLink, a point on a PathLink or a section of a PathLink. These features can have a subsection indicated by the distance from the start and end point, but in most instances will reference the whole feature. These features do not have a direction.

Examples of restrictions potentially applying to an entire link could be access limitations such as ‘step’ or ‘subways’ along a RoadLink.

PathRouteInformation

Information that may influence a pedestrian's choice of route and that applies to one or more PathLink features in a specified direction of travel. This feature can have a distance from the start but can also relate to the whole section of path. There is also an orientation that informs the direction the PathRouteInformation feature applies, for example, in a + or – direction either with or against the direction of digitisation of the PathLink it refers to.

Where the information applies to several links, distanceFromStart and point are not populated. Where the information applies to a specific point, both the distanceFromStart and the point are populated.

Examples would include turn restrictions (which apply to multiple links), one-way paths (which affect a single link in a specified direction) and access restrictions that apply in one direction only.

Where location along a PathLink is relevant and available, this information is supplied as both National Grid coordinates and the distance along the PathLink from its start point.

PathPartialLinkInformation

PathPartialLinkInformation is information that may influence a pedestrian's choice of route and applies to a portion of a single PathLink feature in any direction of travel. An example would be an access restriction, such as subways, that may be used at specific times and only applies to ‘x’ amount of a PathLink.

Where the information applies to part of a link, the subsectionDistance values indicate the beginning and end of the section (measured from the start node of the associated PathLink), as do the subsectionPoint values.

Location along the PathLink is supplied as both National Grid coordinates and the distance along the PathLink, from its start point to the start and end of the section the information applies to.

These features do not exist in the first release of ITN Urban Paths.
