ITN network features

Three concepts underpin the provision of network features in OS MasterMap® Integrated Transport Network™ Layer (ITN): a feature-based model, representative change tracking and association with other OS MasterMap layers.

Feature model

In the context of OS MasterMap data, real-world entities, such as buildings and roads, are represented by features that have identity, location and other attribution.

Feature life-cycles

Changes to real-world entities, described in the feature specification, are reflected in changes to the data. The OS MasterMap capture specifications define the types of real-world change constitutes a change to an existing feature in the data and the types of change result in a new feature being created. This definition provides a consistent representation of changes in the real world.

Due to the periodic nature of data capture and update, other notable changes may have occurred to the real-world entities between survey dates; these intermediary changes are not recorded in the data.

Integrating OS MasterMap layers

OS MasterMap layers can be integrated with each other as they share common coordinate systems and context. With the exception of the Imagery Layer, the TOID identifier attribute provides a unique feature-level link for referencing between related features in different OS MasterMap layers and features in other datasets. For example, in OS MasterMap Address Layer 2 data there is an explicit link between the addressable feature and the OS MasterMap Topography Layer feature that it falls within. Similarly, each ITN road link is attributed with the TOID of the Topography Layer feature it falls within.
