Qualifier types on routing information features

In OS MasterMap® Integrated Transport Network™ Layer (ITN), routing information features provide details on environmental and routing restrictions that may affect a choice of route. The nature and applicability of Road Routing Information (RRI) features and Path Routing Information (PRI) features are provided in the form of three qualifiers:

  • Environmental qualifiers: the nature of the routing information. For example, one-way streets, level-crossings, bridge heights or traffic calming measures.
  • Vehicular qualifiers: the types of vehicles or pedestrians affected by the routing information. For example, a section of road for buses only or a path that is unsuitable for wheel-chair access.
  • Date/time qualifiers: when the routing information is in effect. For example, seasonal road closures or part-time bus lanes that are only in operation during certain hours of the day.

Furthermore:

  • An environment qualifier is always required.
  • A date/time qualifier is optional; if one is not present, the routing information applies at all times.
  • A vehicle qualifier is optional; if one is not present, the routing information applies to all vehicle types.

Environment qualifiers

An environment qualifier indicates any known environmental conditions that may be useful for routing, in the form of either an instruction or classification. Examples of an instruction include ‘no right turn’ or ‘one way’. Examples of a classification include ‘ford’, ‘level crossing’ or ‘barrier’.

Date and time qualifiers

A date/time qualifier specifies the date and/or time period to which the routing information applies. This time information may be expressed through known named dates/times or specified dates/times. The specified dates and times could be ranges of days or times, or single days or times. Some examples are listed below.

Named period

'school hours'

'dusk till dawn'

Sopecified period

'Monday'

Between 8.00 am and 6.00 pm'

'Easter'

'Between Oct 1 and Nov 21'

Vehicle qualifiers

The vehicle qualifier indicates whether the instruction applies, or does not apply, to specific types of vehicle. The vehicle qualifiers define the attributes of a vehicle by use, load or type, and height information.

Examples of use include:

  • Motor vehicles
  • Taxi
  • School bus
  • Emergency vehicle
  • Motorcycles
  • Cycles
  • Pedestrians
  • Ridden or accompanied horses
  • Horse drawn vehicles

Examples of load include:

  • Wide loads
  • Explosives

Examples of type include:

  • Buses
  • Coaches
  • HGVs

Height records a maximum vehicle height.
