Frequently Asked Questions
Please have a look at the questions and answers below and contact us if you require further assistance.
What is an SLD?
A Styled Layer Descriptor (SLD) is an XML schema specified by the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) for describing the appearance of map layers.
Ordnance Survey use SLDs to style vector products in the OS OnDemand Web Map service (WMS) to display a specific map layer as a raster image.
Who can use an SLD?
The SLD has been designed to allow you to style Ordnance Survey datasets and therefore you must also hold a valid licence for the product. The SLD licence terminates automatically on the termination of the applicable dataset.
How can I obtain an SLD?
SLD packs are available from this page. You can simply download the appropriate product zip file that contains a SLD code template with associated metadata and a readme file containing the licence terms.
What is the update regime for SLDs?
SLDs will be amended in line with changes to the relevant product. New SLDs will be created and added to the web page for use as and when a new vector product becomes available. It is not our intention to create update schedules for automatic supply of SLDs.
