The purpose of this assistance section is to provide information to aid those planning a data migration strategy.
The aim is to continually update and add to this information source as we gain feedback from those going through the process. To this end suggestions for future content or feedback on current material will be gratefully received. Please send submissions to PAI@ordnancesurvey.co.uk.
Documentation will be version controlled to ensure those using the information know what is the current thinking.
Note: The appropriate PAI migration strategy is totally dependent on your data, how it was captured and what you want from it. Any information provided here is to stimulate thought – it is not a definitive instruction.
The following links will take you to documents that aim to get you thinking, and to give you practical advice and tools to help you prepare for PAI. Some of these documents in turn provide links to further help or information.
This is a good place to start if you are coming across PAI for the first time.
Step-by-step guide (PDF 640 Kb)
This document gives advice on making sure that you know the timing of PAI for your area and suggests a method for managing the your Land-Line disks during the process.
Managing your Land-Line library (PDF 64 Kb)
Whilst your area is going through PAI, you may need to consider how your existing users are going to continue working. This document outlines two models for managing your Land-Line tiles on your system, one based on an approach whereby the Land-Line is frozen until the process is complete, and the other on a phased implementation.
The model is currently being updated and will appear here soon
This document suggests that in any organisation there maybe several triggers that will require some action to be taken with regard to PAI. The obvious one is the receipt of the updates themselves, but these examples list others to which you may need to give some consideration.
This document suggests a number of tools or actions an organisation could consider to reduce the impact of PAI, especially on workloads.
Reducing the impact of PAI (PDF 74 Kb)
This document is a table to help you assess your own data, how it was captured and how it is being used. This will aid in the decision-making process on what you should be doing with the data. This matrix is part of the more comprehensive paper audit questionnaire to assess the impact of PAI on a specific dataset.

The PAI companion was not produced as a comprehensive guide to the PAI programme. The companion originated as an internal briefing paper for Ordnance Survey staff. This briefing paper was then shared with the Pan–government and Local Authority PAI work groups who thought there would be great value in making it more widely available. As a result the PAI companion was produced by the PAI programme team. It replicates much of the information available on the Ordnance Survey website, but in a format suitable for printing. The companion will be regularly updated and it recommended that users check that they have the latest edition.

Recommendations for further topics to cover or ways to improve the companion will be gratefully received at:
Ordnance Survey are looking to include a number of case studies and would very much like to hear from those customers who would like to contribute. Studies are often written once a project has been completed. Because PAI is a five year programme we are keen to work with and promote customers progress throughout the process.
The following case study is an example of a Utility's approach to PAI.
An example of a utility customers approach to PAI (PDF 616 Kb)
The two case studies below are of German utility companies who have recently undertaken and completed positional accuracy programmes. The drivers, which are explained, are very different but much of the methodology and the steps they undertook are similar to those required in this country. There are lessons to be learnt and not just for utilities.
German experience with PAI: DEW example (PDF 1412 Kb)
German experience with PAI: E-On Bayern AG example (PDF 287Kb)
The following case studies are examples of Local Authorities approach to PAI.
Stratford-on-Avon (PDF 331 Kb) Dartmoor National Park Authority (PDF 556 Kb) Colchester Borough Council (PDF 328Kb)

The PAI case studies within this section have been supplied to Ordnance Survey by vendors offering systems or services to users. It is hoped that making them available in one location will be of assistance to those planning their data migration. Inclusion of a case study does not mean that Ordnance Survey endorses either the company or methodology.
Inclusion is dependent on the vendor gaining permission to publish from all third parties mentioned in the case study.
