Ordnance Survey – Great Britain's national mapping agency
During December 2001 the Ordnance Survey Ireland act was passed by the Oireachtas and signed by the President of Ireland. This Act sets out the duties of Ordnance Survey Ireland as the national mapping agency and provides for us to be set up as a non-commercial state body. Our new status will enable us to respond more effectively to the ever-changing market and customer needs. Ordnance Survey Ireland as the national mapping agency has a key role supporting the economic development of Ireland. Accurate and up to date geographic information is a vital part of the infrastructure of a modern economy.
In this regard we are continuing to implement Irish Transverse Mercator (ITM) the new coordinate reference system for Ireland. Our databases will shortly be fully available in this new reference system. An Active GPS Network is now available across the Internet simplifying the use of GPS and our mapping.
Our work to complete national vector coverage of the state continues. In 2001 we revised and made available all 1807 maps at 1:1000 scale for the urban areas, and over 500 maps at 1:2500 scale. In addition we completed over 900 new maps at the 1:2500 scale with the new 1:5000 scale progressing as per schedule. This shows that we are still on track to complete national vector coverage by 2004.
We completed an internal reorganisation of our large scale mapping areas in January 2002 . One area is now focused on new mapping, and the other on the revision of existing mapping. We have also been developing systems to allow us to use the Geodirectory, our national Address database to highlight mapping requiring revision.
The latest innovation within Ordnance Survey is the development of the e-commerce system. This includes a front end Internet access for ordering and delivery of our data and a new database storage facility for exporting in the required formats.
It is our objective to further improve on the standards of customer care that we have set. We believe that our customers have the right to expect the best possible service from Ordnance Survey Ireland and we are confident that by building on our achievements to date and by adopting a creative open minded approach to new challenges we can continue to develop our commitment to our customers and as a result play a vital part in the economic development of the country.
