Ordnance Survey – Great Britain's national mapping agency

Terra future has now happened! Ordnance Survey hosted the event in the Ordnance Survey Business Centre in Southampton on 20 September 2005.
The event proved a useful forum for gathering the right representatives to peer into the future of geographic information (GI) for use in mainstream business. The brainchild of the Research & Innovation department, the event propagated the main theme around the coming of age of GI.
Whilst the opening presentations of the day covered how societal and technological changes affect us all, the exhibition and remaining speakers placed them in a context where GI becomes the enabler.
Peter Cochrane OBE, the keynote speaker and facilitator for the conference, commented that existing business models will change as ‘…positioning systems become as essential as communications technology’. Peter also aptly summed up that, ‘if time equals money, then so does position’. This he illustrated by demonstrating that uncertainty of delivery in global cargo costs the world’s economy $2 trillion US per year. The combination of tracking of goods against viable data will revolutionise the way the logistics businesses operate by ensuring trucks are full, customers are informed and logistics capacity is shared amongst many users.
Terra future boasted forward-thinking organisations, researchers, universities and experts in the field of GI and beyond. The diversity of expertise amongst delegates gathered discussed how unique insights into innovations under development is ensuring that GI is more and more part of mainstream processes.
For those who attended, we thank you for your participation, and for those of you could not join us, we look forward to welcoming you to future events.
