Land-Form PROFILE® Plus

About the product

Land-Form PROFILE® Plus is a high-specification digital terrain model designed to underpin modelling applications and prediction analysis in a GIS environment. It supports sophisticated environmental risk assessments, including flooding and pollution management in addition to a range of applications in the engineering, planning and insurance industries.

The digital terrain model is designed to complement our large scale topographic data such as OS MasterMap® Topography Layer. Land-Form PROFILE Plus is designed to support specialist GIS and CAD applications that require high accuracy and resolution. It is a bare earth model with all surface features removed, including trees, buildings and bridges. Much of the dataset is made up from newly captured and highly accurate LIDAR and photogrammetric data. It offers 15–25 centimetre accuracy for targeted high-risk flood plain and urban areas, within an overall 0.5 metre route mean square error (RMSE) accuracy specification. In improved areas the higher-accuracy content has undergone specific processing to ensure fluvial fidelity, to model ‘engineered’ landform features, such as cuttings and embankments, and to ensure that transportation routes are flat transversely and smooth longitudinally.

With national coverage, high resolution and high vertical accuracy, Land-Form PROFILE Plus is the definitive tool for precise landscape analysis.

Features

  • +/- 0.5 m RMSE on a 2 m grid in selected urban and flood plain areas;
  • +/- 1.0 m RMSE on a 5 m grid in rural areas;
  • +/- 2.5 m RMSE on a 10 m grid in mountain and moorland areas;
  • continuous national coverage with targeted specification to provide the greatest resolution in areas at risk of flooding;
  • edgematched within high accuracy areas;
  • 3 formats – NTF, DXFTM, ArcGRID; and
  • supplied in 5 km2 tiles.
  • Compatible with other products, for example OS MasterMap®  Imagery, Topography, Address, ITN Layers to enable full interoperability.

Suggested applications

  • Developers/civil engineers – assessing land for new development, modelling for flood risk and physical suitability of land for development.
  • Utilities – pipeline planning, water pressure analysis.
  • Telecoms – signal propagation (also need building heights).
  • Insurance – flood risk modelling.
  • Environmental – pollution analysis and noise mapping.
  • Emergency services  – target response to deploy resources effectively.
  • Presentations  – use with multiple layers, for example media fly-throughs with imagery or topographic mapping.

The Atlantis Initiative

Ordnance Survey is a lead member of Atlantis, which was established in 2005 to promote an inter-agency government response to the need for interoperable environmental data to support water-related policies, notably flood modelling and management. This includes the impact of different depths of flooding, surface type, speed and volumes of flow, thus allowing better prediction and response to flood events. Land-Form PROFILE Plus is a core dataset under the umbrella of Atlantis, which has been given added impetus and urgency through the publication of the Pitt Review in 2008.

Together with the Environment Agency's Detailed River Network, Land-Form PROFILE Plus is supported under Atlantis by several complementary datasets, supplying information on topics such as geology, river flow, coastal processes and rainfall. These datasets provide users with interoperable information enabling sound decision making at a strategic level.

This collaboration ensures that scenario planning is much easier to perform. By combining intelligent geographic datasets alongside new technology, users are determining and managing the causes and impact of flooding. By improving flood modelling and the accuracy of event forecasting and predictions, Atlantis enables a
consistent approach to information underpinning all aspects of the flooding life cycle.
