Ordnance Survey – Great Britain's national mapping agency

OS MasterMap® privacy policy

At Ordnance Survey we are compliant with all aspects of the United Kingdom Data Protection Act 1998.
The information you have supplied will be used by OS MasterMap, for the administration of the contract, future customer management, audit purposes or, occasionally, for fraud prevention or tracing of debtors. We may contact you with further information on our products, for marketing purposes (see below) or feedback on our Customer Service and the OS MasterMap website.

We may conduct a search with one or more credit reference agencies, who will retain a record of that search and may share that information with other businesses. OS MasterMap may also make enquiries about the principal directors with a credit reference agency. OS MasterMap may pass your information to one of our Partners if we believe they can more suitably meet your needs.

There are two primary types of information provided by OS MasterMap customers. The definitions and treatments of these types of information are as follows:

Financial information
Payment information gathered during the registration process – including, but not limited to, financial institutions, expiry dates and card numbers – is considered financial. This information is not distributed under any circumstances.

Professional information
Data that customers provide to OS MasterMap through various methods of communication with OS MasterMap and Ordnance Survey is considered professional information that is stored and managed for OS MasterMap's internal use. Professional data includes, but is not limited to, name, address, company name, company address, telephone number, fax number, email address, market sector, product(s) of interest/purchased, hardware/software platforms, means of contact with OS MasterMap/Ordnance Survey as well as questions answered on a survey or registration form. We retain a history of the purchases you have made from us. This allows us to monitor the success of the service and the suitability of our products.

Data captured during a visit to an OS MasterMap/Ordnance Survey website, as well as during a visit to Ordnance Survey or one of its partners, is also considered professional information and may also be stored for OS MasterMap's internal use. Professional information may be, upon the consent of OS MasterMap and its customers, shared with other organisations or OS MasterMap customers for the purpose of facilitating business relationships in our customers' best interests.

Information that is collected and stored by OS MasterMap may be used for marketing purposes such as, but not limited to:

  • Cluster analysis
  • Marketing surveys
  • Customer satisfaction questionnaires/phone calls
  • Launches of new products
  • Invitations to seminars
  • Test groups
  • Newsletters
  • Mailshots
  • Invitations to road shows
  • Early adopter testing of new products

Opt out
OS MasterMap will accept, acknowledge and maintain any customer's request to opt out of either future communication from OS MasterMap or Ordnance Survey, or communication from a third party to whom OS MasterMap provides the customer's information.

OS MasterMap will accept opt-out requests as follows:

  • by sender: Ordnance Survey or third party; or
  • by direct customer contact: that is customer visit; or
  • by medium: mail, telephone, fax, email (or all).

Security of information provided to OS MasterMap and security of purchasing online

Security of your company information is treated seriously by Ordnance Survey. Your organisation's details are held in the secure area of our site, which requires an account number, user name and password to access. It is your organisation's responsibility to safeguard your OS MasterMap account number, user name and password.

The purchase area of our site is secure; this means that we utilise industry-standard Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) technology to allow for the encryption of potentially sensitive information such as your name, address and other critically sensitive information.

Information passed between your computer and our website cannot be read (in the clear) in the event that someone else intercepts it.

You may have noticed that the SSL certification is not being displayed (https in the address box and a padlock in the status window). This is because we are using frames to aid navigation; however, this page is 100% secure. This can be verified by right clicking on this screen and viewing its properties.

How does OS MasterMap protect customer information?

When you place orders, we offer the use of a secure server. The secure server software SSL encrypts all information you input before it is sent to us. Furthermore, as required by the UK Data Protection Acts of 1984 and 1998, we follow strict security procedures in the storage and disclosure of information, which you have given us to prevent unauthorised access. Our security procedures mean that we will occasionally require proof of identity before we are able to disclose sensitive information to you.
