OS MasterMap® Topography Layer - How to use it

The Topography Layer helps in the planning and management of land and property by allowing you to visualise the context of any feature or site. There are nine themes, representing land area classifications, buildings, roads, tracks and paths; rail; water; terrain and height; heritage and antiquities; structures; and administrative boundaries.

You can use the Topography Layer to pinpoint individual properties and precise sites when a high level of detail is required; and to assess the impact of a proposed development effectively and efficiently. You can even determine and show the exact location of services, such as utility cabling or pipelines.

The Topography layer can be used with the other OS MasterMap layers to deliver the following business benefits:

  • The OS MasterMap Imagery Layer and the ITN Layer – to get a highly accurate picture of an area or site and indicate the inherent advantages and disadvantages of the area under review.
  • The OS MasterMap Address Layer and the ITN Layer – to plan transport and distribution logistics more accurately and to establish the most cost-effective and quickest routes for deliveries.
  • The user's own information or third party data – to add an extra dimension to land use analysis. For example, users can examine land available for construction by identifying brownfield sites and using the Topography Layer to determine its size, location and context.

Topography layer data needs to be used within geographical information systems (GIS) or Computer Aided Design (CAD) database systems. Click here for details Ordnance Survey's Licensed Partners, who offer such GIS systems.
