Jack's graduate story

Jack's now a Technical Consultant

I studied oceanography and geography at Southampton Uni, then did a Master’s at UCL in Advanced Spatial Analysis and Visualisation.

I chose the graduate scheme at OS as I didn’t want to get lost in the world of academia. I wanted to help solve real-world problems. OS seemed a good place to do this and I thought it would give me the time and opportunity to develop as an employee, and learn as I went along.

It’s also a recognisable brand, seemed supportive and offered the potential of a long-term career.

In my first year I was a product developer, and then I joined the Consultancy & Technical Services team where I offered a bespoke consultancy service – finding analytics-based solutions to customer problems, rather than them buying something from us ‘off the shelf’.

One of my biggest projects has been an addressing solution for a major multinational technology company. By combining our products in a way no others had before, on a national scale, we managed to secure a multi-million pound contract.

We’ve had opportunity to work in the UAE, Bahrain and Oman. OS helped with the London 2012 Olympics and now I’m holding out for Tokyo in 2020!

But the smaller projects are just as interesting. I loved working on a bespoke analysis and visualisation tool looking at under-performing schools. We can use techniques to compare areas demographically to show if there are any patterns and correlations.

We have the capacity as a business to support all kinds of industries, such as green energy, utilities and infrastructure. We can show what areas can benefit from solar investment, for example, or where to build houses away from risk of flooding.

Putting stuff together to solve these sort of problems is really satisfying.

I find OS a great environment to work in, partly because of the people and partly because of its location. You get a better quality of life in Southampton. You’re not stuck for an hour on the tube each day. You can cycle to work, you have the New Forest right here, and you’re not far from the beaches. I’m 26 and I own my own house. I couldn’t do that in London.

There’s also potential for graduates with the right skill sets to work overseas. We’ve had opportunity to work in the UAE, Bahrain and Oman. OS helped with the London 2012 Olympics and now I’m holding out for Tokyo in 2020!

At OS there are lots of opportunities for graduates to make a difference. You have a lot of freedom to experience and learn the things you want to. If you’re willing to find your own direction and put your ideas forward you could progress quickly here.
